We create illustrated maths tasks for children aged 5 to 11+, pairing original watercolour artwork with carefully written adult guidance and YouTube video walkthroughs. The result: tasks children want to engage with, and parents can confidently support.
Many children find maths dry, difficult, or anxiety-inducing. Many parents want to help at home but feel underprepared. Beautiful Maths addresses both. The watercolour illustrations capture a child’s attention and make the work feel approachable. The written guidance and video walkthroughs mean that any adult — regardless of their own maths background — can support their child step by step.
Research in educational psychology has long recognised that how we present learning matters as much as what we teach. Jerome Bruner, one of the most influential figures in education theory, argued that genuine interest in a subject is essential for learning — and that children learn best through active, constructivist engagement rather than passive memorisation. When a child is drawn in by something that captures their attention, they don’t just complete a task — they think, explore, and make meaning.
We see this most clearly in reading. Decades of research in literacy education show that illustrated picture books significantly increase children’s motivation to read — the images draw children in, lower the barrier to engagement, and make the experience feel rewarding before a single word is decoded. Children don’t need to be persuaded to pick up a beautiful book. They reach for it.
Beautiful Maths applies the same principle to mathematics. Just as a child is motivated by pictures to read, they can be motivated by pictures to solve problems. By making tasks visually attractive — through original watercolour illustrations that feel warm, inviting, and unlike anything a child expects from a maths worksheet — we increase the likelihood that a child will want to pick it up and try. That first moment of curiosity is where learning begins.
